iPhone Update 1.1.1 Released

Earlier today, Apple realeased iPhone update 1.1.1 via iTunes. It is 150 Mbs and carries the following warning:

"If you have modified your iPhone's Software, applying this software update may result in your iPhone becoming permanently inoperable."

Apparently this update will destroy your iPhone if it is unlocked -- there are actually numerous 2nd-hand-reports of iPhones exploding when the update is applied, so be careful.

Here's a list of what's new:

- iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
- Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
- Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites or music controls
- Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
- Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
- Stocks and cities in Stocks and Weather can be re-ordered
- Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
- Support for TV Out
- Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
- New Passcode lock time intervals
- Adjustable alert volume

Update #1: Apparently, your iPhone won't explode if you have 3rd party applications installed, but this update will not allow you to use them anymore. So if you really love the just-okay NES emulator, don't install this update until the hackers hack it. If you do decided to install this update, you will be forced to do a full restore, which will erase any photos you have not downloaded, so be sure to download photos and sync before updating.

Update #2: Apple has posted a video tour of all the new features that will be added to your iPhone when you update to firmware 1.1.1

I'd like to know what % of iPhone users have 3rd party apps on them. Thinking about all of the people I know who have iPhones it's about half. Of course I run in a higher tech crowd. But it seems that even some of the lower tech people have done it.

IF 25% of iPhone users have them mod'ed with other apps. Wouldn't you think that would send a strong message to Apple that we want apps? At 25% that's a 250,000 users.

I've been reading too many reports of people's NON-UNLOCKED phones becoming bricked. I for one am NOT going to update my iphone software or my itunes software until all this BS Mess has settled down.

Also.. with Amazon MP3 store now selling DRM-free music compatible with every mp3 player and computer on the planet, for the same price (or less) as the iTunes music store, there's now NO REASON to ever update itunes.

If it ain't broke - don't brick it!

I did the 1.1.1 update last night and am glad I did. The new features and updates are already making a difference in my use of the iPhone. I even think it's running a little faster.

When I purchased the phone, I did so with the complete knowledge that Apple and AT&T were partnering to provide a mobile phone experience that no one has yet to duplicate.
I'm glad that Apple continues to update the experience.

Those of you who didn't think through the ramifications of your decision to un-lock your phone shouldn't complain... Apple and AT&T (and soon the European carriers) are undoubtedly going to continue to protect their investments. Learn to live with it.

I totally agree with the iphonebuz comment about AT&T. I don't have a problem with AT&T or with edge.

I also understand why people were so bent on unlocking it. It's understandable to want to have the best of both worlds, the iphone on the network of your choice. But doing THAT means no more support.

But all those UNLOCKERS have to do it never update it. It works now. Apple warned that the update would brick your phone - so WHY WOULD anyone think that it wouldn't. Wait a day and see what everyone else says.

But on my end - I just think that it's a great personal computer in my pocket and FOR NOW I'd rather have my iphone running 3rd party apps than have the wifi store. So I choose not to update.

I wish that Apple would accept that this is what the community wants, and that it's not really hurting anyone for us to write apps for THIS personal computer the same as we do on other apple personal computers.
